# AI cited this site 80 times. It never visited.

AI assistants do not read your website when they answer. They answer from their own index: a copy of your page they made earlier. We measured it. Across 80 citations of one site, the assistant did not visit the page once while writing the answer.

## The test

We took a site we operate and logged every AI crawler and fetcher that touched it, by name, with its identity checked. Then we asked ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini about the site’s category 145 times, through the models directly and through the apps, logged out.

For every answer we recorded the second it started, the second it finished and every page it cited. Then we looked in the log for a visit to each cited page during that answer.

## The result

| Assistant | Answers that cited the site | Citations | Visits while answering |
| ChatGPT, model | 10 of 35 | 13 | 0 |
| Perplexity, model | 22 of 35 | 60 | 0 |
| ChatGPT app | 5 of 20 | 6 | 0 |
| Gemini app | 1 of 20 | 1 | 0 |
| **Total** | **38** | **80** | **0** |

Eighty citations. Zero visits. The assistants cited the site from their own copy of it.

## Where the copies came from

We traced each cited page back through the log to the assistant’s last visit.

| The assistant’s last visit to the cited page | Citations |
| Earlier, by its crawler | 47 |
| Earlier, while answering a different question | 6 |
| Only after the answer | 11 |
| Before our log even began | 16 |

- **The crawler does the reading.** Perplexity’s crawler had typically been to a cited page seven hours before the answer.
- **One read serves many answers.** Six of ChatGPT’s citations were pages it had fetched for a different question, typically within the hour before.
- **Copies last.** Sixteen citations were of pages no AI crawler had touched since our log started the day before. In another test, ChatGPT handed a 22-hour-old copy of a page to a new conversation.

## What else we saw

- **When ChatGPT did read live, it did not cite what it read.** Its fetcher read three pages of the site during two questions. Neither answer cited them.
- **Perplexity visits after it answers.** Its crawler made 20 requests in the two minutes after our first question, and re-read four cited pages within 30 seconds of the answer.

## What to do about it

- **Watch the right moments.** Nothing touches your site at the moment AI cites it, so ordinary analytics show nothing. What your site does see is the crawler that comes hours before and the person who clicks through after. Log both.
- **Get into the index.** The crawler is the door. Every page you want cited has to be reachable and readable by the assistants’ crawlers before the question is ever asked.
- **Plan for the lag.** A change you make today is not in the answer today. Publish ahead of the moment you need it.
- **Join the two sides.** Asking the questions your buyers ask shows you the citation. Your site’s log shows the read before it and the visit after it. Put them together and you can follow one page from the crawler, to the answer, to the person who arrives.

That is what NUR does. It asks on a schedule and records every answer and every citation. On your site, it logs every AI crawler and agent that arrives, and checks that they can read what they find. Then it joins the two, so you see which pages AI read, which it cited, and which brought someone to you.

About this test: one site, 145 answers, 11 October 2026. We log the crawlers and fetchers that identify themselves. We are repeating it on more sites.
